Instant Zen Jim McMullan Michael Levin Books Reviews
This book found me on a day of solitary wandering in the urban landscape that is New York City. Pick it up, flip to a random page, and enjoy it's simple wisdom. Or don't.
Instant Zen is absolutely unique in its design and concept and provides something most of those self-help books can only hope to accomplish a sense of well-being and dimensional perspective on life and its challenges. This book is cheaper than Prozac and considerably better for one's body chemistry. Brilliantly done!
I don’t know if it was intentional, or perhaps just the magic synchronicity of the universe, but I think it is wonderful that the title of this book, “Instant Zen” combines the two words in such a way that, to me, they create a Zen Koan can one be taught, in an instant, that which cannot be taught? Indeed, the first quote on the back cover seems to reinforce my belief when it says, “We can only know that we know nothing”! And, and not that I would start a sentence with ‘and’, the introduction also adds further elucidation when the authors say, “The purpose of Zen is not understanding…” So, this is a book that can teach us what can’t be taught, by illuminating nothing! Now that is Zen.
OK, enough of the fun stuff, it’s time to get down to serious business; after all, enlightenment and book reviews aren’t something to joke about. So, why did the monk cross the road?....
The authors of “Instant Zen,” Jim McMullan and Michael Levin, have created a really unique way to explore and learn some of the ancient Zen wisdom. They “…combine over 200 authentic Zen and Taoist sayings-arranged on split pages-into an endless variety of thought-provoking meditations” and this in turn means that there are over 10,000 combinations that blend “...profound advice with the whimsical and entertaining nature of fortune cookies.” Therefore, for those that don’t get instant Zen, you have 30 years of reading one combination/day before you go into reruns.
Randomly opening the book, the combinations that appeared for me were
“All know the way; few actually walk it.” -combined with- “One word-to a wise man; on lash-to a bright horse.”
“Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment.” -combined with- “ More words count less.”
“When the mind is everywhere, it is nowhere.” -combined with- “Cling not and thieves will disappear.”
Just like with Zen, ‘every way’ is part of ‘the way’, so there is no wrong or right way to use this book. If the idea of having two thoughts at a time doesn’t appeal to you, then perhaps just reading one is the way to go. Alternatively, you could just flip through until you find one you like, or that your kid likes, or that your dog licks (your dog can’t read, so how is it going to like one or the other?)
So, to finish off with the answer to the riddle…What road? There is no road to cross.
Great find! Out of print. Too bad it is. Very clever and actually quite worthwhile, as well.
