As someone living with bipolar disorder who has family members also struggling with brain disorders, I greatly appreciate Amanda LaPera’s story about her father’s late onset schizophrenia. Untreated brain disorders and homelessness negatively affect family members and society as a whole. Lack of insight into one’s brain disorder and the need for help makes treating it challenging.Tags : Losing Dad, Paranoid Schizophrenia: A Family's Search for Hope [Amanda Lapera, Xavier Amador] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <span>Silver Award recipient of IBPA's prestigious Benjamin Franklin book award in the category of psychology,Amanda Lapera, Xavier Amador,Losing Dad, Paranoid Schizophrenia: A Family's Search for Hope,Adamo Press,0989703738,Abnormal psychology,Biography & Autobiography : Personal Memoirs,Biography & AutobiographyPersonal Memoirs,Personal Memoirs,Psychology,Psychology Psychopathology General,Psychopathology - General

This is an excellent read. The author has such a way with words that you almost feel that you are a part of the story. You want to find some way to help the family. You feel their frustration when they find out just how seriously ill their father has been for sometime and they didn't even know it. Their anger and disbelief that it was happening to their father. You MUST read the book to find out the whole story. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. I was fortunate enough to receive an AUTOGRAPHED HARD COVER EDITION from the author herself.
I'm actually more of a science fiction/adventure story kind of person, but I found this book very well-written. On a few occasions I found myself staying up till midnight or later because I wanted to see what happened next! Having worked in an office with an individual with early stages of paranoid schizophrenia, it brought back some of my memories of being accused of trying to 'sabotage their success.' The accusations seemed so out of left field. I hope Ms. LaPera much success in her crusade to bring this 'street' illness to the limelight.
This book validated my life. I am currently experiencing the same thing with losing my dad to senility, and the book really took me home. The tales written in the book are so similar to my ordeal that I cried on the inside. This book is absolutely a buy. Certainly there were some hilarious moments in the book, because the elderly can be funny in the things they do. Please read this book!!
Read the whole book in one sitting, could not put it down. Very Inspirational story of hope. Felt like I was going through the whole ordeal with the character )
Wow, what an amazing story! How many times have I seen an obviously mentally ill person on the street and wondered about their situation? It's so interesting to get an inside glimpse at just one example of how someone ended up there. It could happen to any of us and the anguish of the family as they realize how powerless they are to help their ill loved one is something I hadn't much considered before. This is a very well written book and an important story.
This book clearly shows the heart breaking dilemma of love ones who try to get help for a mentally ill member. It gives good insight and I
Would recommend this book to anyone who faces this sorrow. Elaine Stafford
I very much appreciate the story shared with me. Being new to possible schizophrenia with in my 20 year old son. This book helped me understand that I am not alone in this confusing, unbelievable, scary situation. It has made me be stronger each time I feel defeated by the system or the illness taking over my boy. I will never stop advocating for the one I love. I will never again look down on a homeless person. I never would want even my worst enemy to have to go through this kind of pain, feeling worthless knowing you cannot fix your child and control the confusion going on in their mind. I am at a loss for words but no matter what I will keep fighting for him until something changes in the law to make him get help.
