Okay three and a half star because there is much to like about this book. It is what people now call a beach read--and it is a good solid beach read. I found the writing and pace to be quite good. I really admire the author's ability to keep the reader guessing right on to the end. I enjoyed reading about all the technical aspects of painting and "forgery" even though I know nothing about painting. Maybe an art person will find fault, but I found it all to be sensible and fascinating

On the downside, it's formulaic. There are the requisite number of stand-by-you friends and villains. Character development is lacking for the most part, although I felt she did the villains well. I understood them better than the main character. I never quite understood the main character Claire getting involved in the situation in the first place. The character's whole back story never rang true for the person the author presents to us. One major problem for me was that the "incident" that causes Claire to be where she is at the beginning of the book left me feeling she was kind of a jerk. No details here to prevent spoilers. I closed the book still thinking, "hmmm, I don't know. Something doesn't fit there." It's a book that could have been a great book with a bit more work.

I found myself looking forward to rising early and reading large sections of this novel over cups of good French Roast coffee. The basic reason for this was Claire, the heroine, whose character drives the plot. Claire shares something successful artists, mathematicians, physicists, poets and novelists possess; a nearly compulsive consuming work ethic. The second is luck, being placed in a situation where you can make the most of your talent and drive. And that in a sense is what happens here. As an artist Claire creates a masterpiece when her lover, an established artist, simply doesn't feel like it. It can happen. This is an odd turn, essentially she gives her work to the older man and in a sort of inverse plagiarism, his career is made. Claire achieves notoriety in the art world from trying to reclaim it. This sets the stage for the approach to her by an art dealer to forge a Degas stolen in the biggest art heist in history. The wrinkle here is the Degas itself is a forgery. Something Claire figures out. And the plot, and various subplots, evolve from there in a satisfying, complex, layered, mystery. Who painted the forgery Claire works from? Is there an original Degas? Where is it? Why does the original forgery exist? In the end will Claire escape the clutches of the law and succeed as an artist. You end up caring what happens because Shapiro has created a believable and sympathetic character. Essential to this is the sort of research into the art world that makes the story believable. This ranges from art history, to artistic technique to the trade and economics of art itself. So enjoy this book, be careful with the coffee, it can hurt your concentration, and this book sort of requires it.
I am a painter myself and have read a lot about painting technique and art history, not to mention spending a lot of time in museums. I am left with nothing but admiration for this very clever novel, the plot is breathtakingly well conceived and the story unfolds at a riveting pace. Of course there are some elements which jump the shark a bit, but I was perfectly happy to take them in stride for the sake of such a fun romp through the art world. The writing, while not literary, is very competent and doesn't detract from a rip-snorting great story. I think anyone with even a passing interest in Degas, the contemporary art market and museums will find this a delightful and quick read.
I think it was the show White Collar that drew me into this book. All the scenes in that show of Nick forging works of art. Maybe there aren't that many, but they grabbed my imagination. I'm also fascinated by the amount of art that is not so much creativity as technical skill preparing the canvas, for example. And to take all that and craft a truly complex mystery that weave it all together is a tremendous accomplishment. Don't let me give you the impression that the plot of this book is anything but thrilling. It is a page turner. But it's a page turner that has kindled in me a desire to go visit a museum and stare at some works by Degas.
This is my second free download from Prime Reading (the other being
The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison). What luck to find two such absorbing
books that hold the reader's attention until the very end. Thank you, .
This novel deals with a masterpiece, painted by Degas, which hung on a museum
wall for a century before being lost in a heist many years ago. Now, a wheeler-dealer
agent believes he has found the original and wants our young lady "art forger" to
copy it so he can get rich selling the copy and heroically re-hang the original on
the museum wall. Is his painting the one which disappeared? How could we know?
Nobody ever considered whether the disappeared painting was the original.
The Art Forger believes his copy is forged. Who did that? Maybe Degas himself,
in the 1800s, his associates, his rivals, rich collectors, crooks, the family which
established the museum. There are serious legal questions about copying paintings
- you can copy them but it's not legal to sell a copy if you represent it as original.
The art forger, herself, lands in jail at one point. Myriad questions, starting with
Degas, must be answered to find the original and establish its authenticity.
