While the premise of this story was cool, I was really let down by how the heroine's story just jumped forward in quick bursts. Her life was changing so dramatically in the matter of two or three pages. Everything getting more and more tragic and then all of the sudden - never mind, everything's okay now - I've escaped this crappy set of circumstances.

I was intrigued by the unique premise of An Ocean of Minutes and by the publisher's comparison with The Time Traveler's Wife and Station Eleven. A dystopian tale, little time travel and a love story that asks, "can true love stand the test of time?" Yes please!

Buuuuut, the similarities between the three books is weak. Yes, there's a flu pandemic (Station Eleven) and yes there's time travel (Time Traveler's Wife) but that's where the connections end. I wanted to feel more energy, heartache, passion and the danger of a new world.

I found myself slowly becoming invested in the book with its descriptions of the post-apocalyptic world and needing to see how things would pan out for the couple. But I had issues with Polly and Frank. I didn't feel the love between them. A little dysfunctional codependence, sure. But a sweeping romance to stand the test of time? Nope. I wanted to crawl inside their relationship to understand what they were giving up, but the reader is kept at arms' length with Polly, Frank and the secondary characters. As a main character, Polly is rather dull, emotionless and quickly goes from initially trying to find Frank in her new world, to half-hearted attempts to find him to apathy which was more than a little frustrating.

While it wasn't all rainbows and unicorns for me this time out, there were parts I enjoyed and found this to be an easy read. Lim has a fantastic premise and I applaud her for how she incorporated issues of immigration, migration and class structure into her story. But with more romance, a stronger dystopian vibe and more connection to the characters I would have given this book a higher rating.

I thought this was typical science fiction when I saw it involved time travel and pandemic disease and for me, exploring the repercussions of meeting up years later with someone dear was enticing. This novel satisfies in that respect. But only the latter half of the book is a real page turner.

This is really a coming-of-age novel intertwined with a love story, with time travel as the backdrop. Being plunged into a new culture can happen anywhere on this planet today. And, part of growing up means learning there are manipulative people who can and will take advantage of us. Polly, the main character, learns this the hard way and she’s kind of clueless at times. But she also discovers good folks in unlikely groups and unsavory characters. Author Thea Lim doesn’t stint on reality.

While the prose is descriptive, both it and Polly’s thoughts sometimes cause the story to lose its smoothness. The author also goes back in time periodically, enabling us to see the couple’s unfolding love story, but the backstory interruptions are too frequent and sometimes they provide limited insights.

This is not the typical, adventurous sci-fi story. The author takes her time and leads the readers ever deeper into the quicksand, and Polly makes mistakes but determinedly continues to grasp for hope. We see her slowly learn to navigate an unfamiliar society. And the conclusion is convincing and satisfying.

I was curious and finished the book but it didn’t leave me thinking - wow that was a great read.
I was excited to read this book as I loved the premise of it. It unfortunately fell very flat for me. The storyline was hard to follow at parts and the ending was quite anticlimatic in my opinion.
I love stories about time travel, especially when they're done well, as it was here. Polly travels to the future in order to save her fiance, Frank. Nothing works out the way she intended, and the story kept me engaged from beginning to end.
Purchased based on a review in a magazine. Not a fan of the style of writing. The rewrite of past history was confusing and just weird. Perhaps I could have suspended my disbelief if the book had been set in a future time,but I am all too familiar with the 80s and 90s, thus I could not. Additionally, the character development was sketchy and certain plot developments were just plain unbelievable.
