I have been waiting for this book ever since Erick Lee first set foot on the page in ZERO HOUR. He immediately won my heart with his dorky jokes and snappy comebacks, and then I loved him even more when we were able to get a look behind the jokes and see the pain he was silently dealing with, due to the loss of his boyfriend. FINAL DAY delivers more of all of this, but also presents us with an Erick who is starting to heal. It still takes him a bit to see past certain aspects of what happened to Flynn, and how, but it was so wonderful to read Erick coming back into himself, emerging a bit from the grief. Of course, he still mourns Flynn, but he is able to acknowledge attraction to another man and open himself up to something more with a person who isn’t his late, and only, boyfriend. Erick is such a lively, fun character, and I just loved getting to see more of him.

I also really enjoyed getting to see more of Tarr. Mysterious, tight-lipped Tarr who always shows up when Jock needs him and is hopelessly devoted to his sister. It was so interesting to get to the heart of him and see the way he tries to close himself off from caring about people, and somehow manages to fail epically at doing so. He falls so easily and so quickly for Erick, and it was both sweet and distressing to read, because I didn’t want him to get hurt. However, while I really fell for him in this book, I wished the book was longer because it would’ve given us a chance to get to know him better, and in smaller information bursts.

The plot, overall, was very enjoyable, if a bit rushed. I liked that it continued the story from the end of DARKEST NIGHT, and while it sucked that she was put in danger again, I enjoyed the fact that the suspense aspect revolved around protecting Tarr’s sister and her children, as his devoted protectiveness of her was mentioned several times throughout the previous novel in the series. Unfortunately, the action did feel a bit rushed and mushed together. There was a lot packed into such a short novella that would’ve been developed better if the story were longer.

Similarly, the relationship moved really quickly, especially compared to the previous two novels of the series. It’s to be expected, obviously, that novellas will move at a faster pace, but it did feel rushed here, especially considering the circumstances of Tarr’s profession and Flynn’s death. The biggest reason Erick wants to get to know Tarr is to prove that he’s as bad as the hitmen who killed Flynn and dismiss them all as scum, and the realization that Tarr is a complex person is something Erick struggles with for the majority of the story. And yet, once he hears the story of why Tarr became a hitman, proving that it wasn’t for any coldblooded reason, Erick is suddenly all in and ready to start planning a future together. The instalust/instalove made sense as far as Tarr was concerned, as he explicitly mentions that it’s all or nothing for him, but it made me a bit skeptical seeing it in Erick, considering the internal battle he struggled through during the story.

And there was one other, small thing that was a bit strange. At the end, Erick and Tarr are kidnapped by the bad guys, after said bad guys hold Erick, Tarr’s sister, and her children hostage until Tarr arrives at the meeting place. They are, fortunately, saved by Roarke and Jock before anything catastrophic could happen. And Tarr doesn’t mention his sister at all after that? With as worried as he was about her and the kids for the whole story, it was weird that he didn’t insist they go back to check on her, or send Wren, Roarke, or Jock to check on them while the rest of them took Erick and Tarr to the hospital. It just seemed out of character.

Despite my issues, I really did enjoy the overall story! And I hope to see that Dade and Marisol, the rest of Erick’s hacker crew, will be getting books at some point in the future!

Megan Erickson has done it again. Bringing you suspension, excitement, and love. I just hope we will get more from this wayward group of hackers. A great series!
I've been looking forward to this story in the series, but I wish it could've been longer! Also, I really missed the bulk of the rest of the crew, who weren't in this novella.

Erick Lee has been living for revenge since his beloved boyfriend was murdered. He's a fantastic hacker, and he's used his skills to help his best friend, and his boyfriend's brother, Roarke (the hero from book 1), to find the killers. They've picked up some additional friends for their crew, and they've made some more enemies along the way too. When a friend of one of their crew members saves Erick's life on a job, he feels indebted to the guy, but he doesn't want to. The guy's a hitman, and Erick's boyfriend was killed by a hitman. He wants to find the guy and resolve the debt, so he no longer has it hanging over his head.

Everett "Tarr" Hawk has had a rough go in life. Things didn't turn out the way he thought they would, and he made the best he could of a bad situation. He's lived the last 15 years as a hitman. He's just been coasting through life. Never happy. Never making real connections with anyone. The only person he has in his life at all is his sister and her kids, but he tries to stay out of their lives as much as possible, for their own safety. He owes what he considers to be a lifelong debt to his old friend Jock (the hero of book 2). So, when Jock needs help, he shows up and provides it, saving Erick's life in the process. He's drawn to Erick, but he never imagines anything can come of it. But, when Erick's search for him, leads mutual enemies to their doors, they have to work together to fix it.

Tarr and Erick were very drawn to each other from the beginning, but they were both fighting against it for their own reasons. Erick was appalled at himself for being attracted to someone he assumes is amoral. Tarr is scared to make a true connection of any kind. They were pretty decent at communicating with each other, even when their talks were painful and hurtful. I enjoyed watching them fight their connection, and be unable to do so. I also really loved Tarr's conversations with his sister. Though they made me cry, it was cathartic for both of them, I think. And for me too.

The suspense plot was fun, and exciting, and I enjoyed that aspect of the story. But, the overarching suspense plot that's run through the series so far didn't really progress any further, so I really hope that this isn't the final book in this series! I really did miss the fun personalities of the rest of the crew, who weren't in this story. I understand in a novella it's hard to include everyone, and we did get a glimpse of Roarke, Jock, and a bit of Wren (the heroine from book 1, and Erick's sister), so that was great fun. Also, a couple of the new characters in this story were awesome as well, especially Trig.

I really enjoyed this story, and I loved seeing Erick get his HEA. I've come to love his goofball self throughout the series, so I loved seeing him finally happy. Again, I wish there was more to this story, but I loved what I got. I really do hope this isn't the end, since some of the suspense plot of the series is still ongoing. I definitely recommend this story.
