Nobody Move A Novel Denis Johnson 9780374222901 Books Reviews

Disn't hold my interest.
Each of the books of mr. Johnson's I read further convinces me of his power with the English language.
As I was reading this book, I could not help but be reminded of Cormac McCarthy's NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. None of the characters seem to have any moral compass, but I guess that's what noir does. But this book makes anything in Dashiel Hammett sound like child's play.

Jimmy Luntz is a bit unusual (Denis Johnson may have been chuckling when he thought this up) in that he's a barbershop choir performer with a gambling problem. He owes a bookie named Juarez (who happens to be an Arab) something like forty thousand dollars. When Juarez's muscle, Ernest Gambol, shows up to break Jimmy's kneecaps, Jimmy shoots him in the leg, but he can't bring himself to finish the job. As Juarez and Gambol track Jimmy down, Jimmy hooks up with a woman, Anita Desilvera, with even more problems than he has. She's helped her husband steal two point three million dollars, and she's been picked to take the fall. Surprisingly the most empathetic of the bad guys is a character named The Tall Man. All of the other crooks are afraid of him, but maybe it's just because of his deformed face. Anita Desilvera is drop dead gorgeous but the Tall Man senses that there's a bit more to her than just her appearance. For one thing, she doesn't look away when she looks at his face.

I kept expecting Jimmy to meet the same fate as Cormac's main character in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, but Jimmy has a little more crust than even he imagines. There's also a sense that Denis Johnson has something more on his mind than what happens in the plot. This is a very fast read and well worth the money. National Book Award winner Denis Johnson is one of our better and most versatile writers. Jimmy Luntz will remind you of the two brothers in TREE OF SMOKE.
This isn't necessarily too much better than "Angels," Johnson's much earlier foray into the hardboiled, but it does its job -- even if by the next day you may have difficulty remembering anything about it. In that sense it's not much different than the lesser Michael Connellys. Johnson is uneven, and has at times done far worse. He's one of the best American writers, but one whose gift is almost entirely lyric.
Some great lines here and there, but an otherwise meat and potatoes, slight story from Johnson. Lacking in his normally rich characters or poetic prose, there's not much to find for anyone that isn't a Johnson die hard.
I had read and loved Johnson's Train Dreams. This novel is far different. As other reviewers have noted, it calls to mind Elmore Leonard, Hiassen, and that hard boiled, smartalecky style. But there is nobody to like in this tale. Once I got over the idea that there was nobody to root for, I relaxed and just let the story take me wherever it was going. It turned out to be a pretty enjoyable ride, and a passably satisfying ending. Overall, a thumbs up, but be prepared for some startling violence.
If you want to follow the actions of some shady characters, their thought processes and reckless behaviors, this read is ok. But pretty shallow stuff and way too short a "novel" for it's price. It's an expensive romp that left me mildly irritated.
If your looking for and excellent writer that can flesh out characters and story with a minimal amount of fluff, Johnson is the man.
